“The winners from the last recession were those companies who stepped up their investment in innovation early during the crisis” (McKinsey 2019)

With the FTSE100 trading as low as 70% of its first quarter high, the focus for senior executives is firmly set on navigating the unpredictable path ahead. It is natural at times like this to reduce risk and cut investments in areas such as innovation. However, data from the 2008 financial crash shows that businesses who invest in innovation during uncertainty continue to grow at an average rate of 7%, whereas those that don’t invest suffer revenue losses at more than twice that rate (15%) [McKinsey].

And yet, despite the evidence, most organisations still cut investment. As human beings we are far better at assessing near term risk than long term risk, so we tend to prioritise the short term. This has the effect of storing up a negative long term impact in the form of delayed recovery, proposition ageing and the loss of customers. As a Global Systems Integrator, how can you help your clients break this cycle?

Join us for this interactive and confidential roundtable led by Club Founder, James Harris. At the beginning of the meeting we will hear from Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, a hugely respected authority on human behaviour regarding risk. After Sir David’s initial talk we will be exploring three key areas:

1. What is your role in stimulating innovation and maintaining investment with your clients?
2. How can you help your clients maintain their advantage in the long term?
3. And what changes do you need to make today to your sales approach to achieve this?

Speaker: Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter

‘Professor Risk’ is a distinguished statistician and a born communicator, as seen in the BBC’s Tails You Win: The Science of Chance. Just as Daniel Kahneman distinguishes between emotional and analytic decision-making, David focuses on the difference between how we think and how we feel about risk. Numbers don’t speak for themselves; we are influenced by how they’re expressed – in relation to anything from healthy eating to climate change. David explains how to weigh up the real risk.
